TBS Television’s Setoguchi Selected as Next Generation: Asia

March 24, 2009
Tokyo Broadcasting System Television’s Katsuaki Setoguchi, 35, has been selected as one of Hollywood Reporter’s Next Generation: Asia, an honor given to only 20 of the top up-and-comers in film, television and new media in Asia. The Next Generation franchise was introduced by The Hollywood Reporter magazine fifteen years ago in the United States, but this is the first edition focusing on the region of Asia. In order to qualify, nominees had to be responsible for work that was commercially successful and/or critically acclaimed, had to have earned considerable respect among colleagues and peers and had to show the potential to influence the entertainment landscape in the future, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Among over a dozen dramas Setoguchi has produced, particularly “BOYS OVER FLOWERS” was a top-rated drama in each of the two seasons it aired; and “Around 40” helped to change attitudes toward women who choose to live their lives without depending on men and at the same time coined a new phrase for them: “arafo” (women around age 40). He also produced the big screen spin-off of “BOYS OVER FLOWERS” and the feature film “I’d rather be a Shellfish.” One of only three that were selected from Japan, Setoguchi is the only honoree from the Japanese television industry.
